Renters Insurance on Staten Island

Why renters need their own policy

Renters insurance is needed because your landlord’s insurance only covers the building. It does not cover your belongings, and it does not protect you if you are blamed for an accident. A renters policy fills that gap and is one of the more affordable kinds of coverage to carry.

Many Staten Island renters, from garden apartments in Great Kills to buildings near the ferry in St. George, assume they are covered by the building. Usually they are not.

What a renters policy typically includes

  • Personal property: clothing, furniture, electronics, and other belongings after a covered loss such as fire or theft.
  • Liability: protection if a guest is injured in your apartment or you accidentally damage someone else’s property.
  • Additional living expenses: temporary housing and meal costs if your unit becomes unlivable.
  • Medical payments: small medical bills for a guest hurt in your home, regardless of fault.

A licensed local agent will explain what each part does and compare policies from different carriers for you.

Choosing the right amount

A quick walk through your apartment usually shows you own more than you think. Add up the larger items first, then think about clothing, kitchenware, and small electronics.

Two questions worth raising with the agent:

  • Replacement cost or actual cash value? Replacement cost pays what it takes to buy new items. Actual cash value pays less because it accounts for age.
  • Are high-value items covered? Jewelry, cameras, and similar pieces often have lower limits and may need extra coverage.

Good to know

Some landlords and building managers require proof of renters insurance before you sign or renew a lease. If yours does, the partner agent can help you meet the requirement.

Water backup and certain other situations may need added coverage, and flood is typically excluded from a standard renters policy. If you live in a low-lying part of the island, ask about it.

What happens after you submit the form

Your request goes to one licensed local partner agency. An agent will reach out, ask a few simple questions about your apartment, and present your options. There is no obligation to buy.
